Last Sunday we had a Dirt Hombres ride scheduled for the Hartland bike park. Real winter conditions had settled in on Vancouver Island with freezing temperatures and snow. We were unsure what the trails would be like, but we don’t stop riding just because it’s cold out! 😉
To our surprise the trails were in the best shape since the peak of summer. The cold weather had dried out 80% of the trails to super grippy hero dirt and the few spots with mud were frozen and also offered great traction. It was so grippy that some of the tight switchback turns where our rear wheels typically break loose and slide around the turn became a new challenge as our rear tires stuck to the dirt like glue.
Even more rad was the sunshine and insulating properties of the forest made the temperatures very comfortable for us.
So in the end a winter ride we were hoping to survive turned out to be one of the best days on the bike all year. That’s why you just have to head out the door and see what happens. There are pleasant surprises waiting for you at the times you least suspect them.
That was our last Vancouver Island mountain bike ride for 2013. What an amazing year on the trails! I can’t wait for 2014. 🙂
