Hartland Night Ride – 20 Feb 2014

It was moist!

It was moist!

We got out to Hartland last Wed for a night ride. Hartland is conveniently on my way home from my client’s offices so I can score an after work ride pretty easily. 6 Hombres showed up for the ride with one early mechanical reducing the crew to 5 riders.  A light rain started to fall halfway into the ride, but by that point I was sweaty and warm so it didn’t bother me. These last few night rides have been our normal Vancouver Island sloppy slippery winter riding conditions that we’ve avoided for the most part this year. That means having to re-learn my winter riding skills at night while following some fairly fast guys!

Sadly I found out after the ride that a local rider died on a night ride at the same time we were out. 😦 My condolences to his family. That was a good reminder to keep the tires rolling…we never know when this ride is over.

Knolly at night...

Finding folks that like to night ride is a challenge. They need to be confident in their skills and have some decent bike lights. We only hit the trails after dark in Canada during the winter due to the short days and long nights. That means colder and wetter weather which keeps a lot of folks at home.

A short and sweet loop...

A short and sweet loop…

When a new bike buddy from SIMBS suggested a weekday night ride last week I was pretty stoked to dust off the lights and get in some night riding. We cranked around a modest loop at a social pace with lots of chatting and solving of the bike world’s problems.

At the end we were running late so we hit the gas and took the double track back to the parking lot so if you follow this GPS track at the end there are better ways to ride single track all the way back to your car.

We had two new Hombres out for their first club ride – Evan and Dan were a lot of fun to ride with and fit well with the Hombre vibe. We are looking forward to seeing them out for more club rides.

Trail conditions were excellent with only a few really wet spots and lots of dry dirt to ride.

All in all it was a great way to spend the early part of the day Saturday! Thanks to all the Hombres who came out. 🙂

The Dirty Girlz...

The Dirty Girlz…

The day started out cold, damp and foggy with a heavy frost covering the ground. It looked like winter conditions and I reached for my warm riding gear.

As seems to happen so often on Vancouver Island as we rolled up to the Hartland parking lot it was sunny and a lot warmer.

Rest break...

Rest break…

We had a Dirt Hombres ride scheduled for 2 weeks ago, but a cold that was going around decimated the interest levels for a group ride. With the virus getting beat down and folks missing their bikes we managed to get a few hearty souls out on the trail together yesterday.

New Hombre Paul...

Besides the usual crew we had two new riders join us. Hombre Paul was riding a yellow Rocky Mountain Element.

Hombre Dan was riding a Transition Bandit 29er and representing the Big Wheels!

It was great having some new people on the ride. Paul and Dan fit right in with the Dirt Hombre vibe. Michael had blinged out his Heckler so we got to see the lighter and more orange rig in action.

The ladies...

The Dirty Girlz set off on their own ride at first, but after injuries whittled down their crew they decided to put on their sombreros and join the Dirt Hombres for the second half of the ride.

The Hombres...

Trails were in perfect condition with almost no wet spots and our version of Hero Dirt. Get out there and shred.

Winter Wonderland!

A-Man getting frosty...

A-Man getting frosty…

Last Sunday we had a Dirt Hombres ride scheduled for the Hartland bike park. Real winter conditions had settled in on Vancouver Island with freezing temperatures and snow. We were unsure what the trails would be like, but we don’t stop riding just because it’s cold out! 😉

John cranking a turn in the snow...

John cranking a turn in the snow…

To our surprise the trails were in the best shape since the peak of summer. The cold weather had dried out 80% of the trails to super grippy hero dirt and the few spots with mud were frozen and also offered great traction. It was so grippy that some of the tight switchback turns where our rear wheels typically break loose and slide around the turn became a new challenge as our rear tires stuck to the dirt like glue.

Sharon keeping warm...

Even more rad was the sunshine and insulating properties of the forest made the temperatures very comfortable for us.

The Lazy One on the move...

The Lazy One on the move…

So in the end a winter ride we were hoping to survive turned out to be one of the best days on the bike all year. That’s why you just have to head out the door and see what happens. There are pleasant surprises waiting for you at the times you least suspect them.

"Not bad at all!"...

“Not bad at all!”…

That was our last Vancouver Island mountain bike ride for 2013. What an amazing year on the trails! I can’t wait for 2014. 🙂

Hartland SIMBS Trail Maintenance

The drop...

The drop…

I have been admittedly slack in my contribution to trail maintenance since coming to the Island. I figured there was no time like the present to rectify the situation so I headed out for the SIMBS Trail Maintenance Day this past Sunday at the Hartland Mountain Bike Park.

Side view...

Side view…

I was assigned to the crew working on Who’s Your Daddy? A trail I rode just the day before.

The landing...

The landing…

Our mission was to open a new drop into a berm and re-route the easier option traffic around the landing zone so you can hit the feature with less danger of a cross traffic collision

Post landing berm...

Post landing berm…

Our fearless leader Chad wanted lots of soil sifted to build up the berm and the landing zone. Since it was the toughest job and I was one of the newbies I figured I should earn my trail building stripes by working the pick axe and shovel.

Sifting the excavated soil...

Sifting the excavated soil…

It was hard work, but I had good partners to work with and we got to see immediate results as we shaped and packed the soil into the berm. For those that don’t know the reason you sift out the rocks, roots and bits of bark is because fine dirt packs down like concrete and withstands a ton more abuse than the mix of stuff that comes out of the ground. Something I learned on the job. Another cool thing is the hole we excavated to create material for the berm is now a sump that will drain water off the trail letting us ride it in the rain with minimal damage.

Easier roll down on the left side...

Easier roll down on the left side…

I like the fact that there were multiple options on the trail feature we were building so riders of all skill levels can have fun and they can ride together.

We closed off the old trail....

We closed off the old trail….

It was amazing to see the section of trail I had ridden just the day before disappear in a few hours and see a newly rerouted trail appear.

Working on a new re-route...

Working on a new re-route…

Listening to Chad explain the rationale for the design of this feature it was clear a lot of thought had gone into maximizing rider fun and safety while keeping maintenance low. This is important since we ride year round on Vancouver Island – rain or shine. So trails need to be very tough.

More re-routing...

More re-routing…

It was great to see so much progress made during our work session. Chad stuck around after we were done to do some finishing work and he said he would open the feature to riders by the end of the day. Cool! =)

Most of the crew...

Most of the crew…

If you want to get involved the SIMBS Trail Maintenance Day is the 3rd Sunday of every month. Meet in the Hartland parking lot at 845am and work until ~1230pm. If you let SIMBS know you are coming at this link early enough they will provide a sandwich for your lunch. A bunch of the crew goes for a post trail work ride if you want to join them.

Summer at Hartland Again…

Amazing November riding...

Amazing November riding…

Last Monday was a holiday for Remembrance Day. After the 11:11am observance of silence we took advantage of the free afternoon with a ride at the Hartland Bike Park. To our complete surprise the place was nearly summer dry. The last couple rides here have been slick and wet in full winter mode. That can be fun in a challenging way, but the extra traction of dry conditions is something I don’t mind seeing again.

Sean's new to him Heckler...

Sean’s new to him Heckler…

Sean’s lady bought a new Santa Cruz Bronson which meant her old Heckler became his if he wanted it. We discussed the merits of upgrading an old bike vs. selling it and buying something new or used, but setup the way he wanted it. That’s always a tough decision. My suggestion was to ride the Heckler as is since it was running fine and save any upgrade $$ for a new bike at a later date.

Stuff never looks as steep in the pictures as it does in real life...

Stuff never looks as steep in the pictures as it does in real life…

I carried my DSLR the whole ride and we only stopped for pictures once and it was fairly lame. More to at least have take a few pics than because the moment demanded documentation due to its innate awesomeness. Having said that I don’t regret the decision to give up on the point and shoot for my BC forest rides. Every picture with the DSLR is so much better that it’s worth it and the more I carry a heavy backpack the less I notice it during the ride.

Hopefully next time I am riding with guys that put the hurt on me and I leave the DSLR at home I will find some extra snap in my legs. Hopefully…. 😉

Cranking…

All in all it’s been an amazing year of riding on the Island and in other parts of BC. The Weather Gods seem to be cooperating with us at every turn and the terrain is so much fun to ride. I’m pretty much ready to award 2013 the best year of MTBing so far since we moved to Vancouver Island. =)

Dirty Girlz Posse…

The Dirty Girlz Mountain Bike Club had their summer wrap up ride this past weekend at the Hartland Bike Park and I volunteered to take some photos to document the event. I was hoping for some bright sunlight to make capturing the action in the trees easier, but instead we got a healthy dose of fog and cool temperatures. That didn’t stop the ladies from getting their shred on. 😉 We took quite a few action photos which you can enjoy here.

Taking a break…

Winter riding conditions are in full effect. Slippery roots mean you need to break out a whole new set of bike skills that will become second nature for the next 5 months or so.

Time to head down!
